“Saya termasuk pendidikan masa lalu.

Experienced MICE Industry Players Can Get A Bachelor’s Degree
An experience in the MICE industry is equivalent to a formal education through the Recognition of Prior Learning method.
MICE study programs at universities are not attractive enough for students, and this study program hasn’t been a formal discipline for long either. At the State Polytechnic of Jakarta, this study program was founded in 2005 despite the fact that the industry came about a lot earlier than that.
Luckily, now the government is doing the government funded program called the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) through the General Directorate of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.
RPL is a form of recognition of one’s achievement acquired through formal, non-formal, informal education, or work experience converted into formal education.
As we all are aware, competence recognition is now still focused on formal education at educational institutions. Meanwhile, there are many non-formal educational institutions, work experience, and individual participation in training that must receive recognition.
The RPL regulation also applies for MICE industry players. Many higher education institutions have already implemented it. A lecturer at Podomoro University, Santi Palupi, in our podcast on MICE Indonesia’s YouTube channel explained that universities can apply RPL upon the approval from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.
“Several higher education institutions have implemented RPL. We respect and appreciate MICE industry players for their skills and experience that are equivalent to a diploma or bachelor degree,” explained Santi.
Director of MICE Professional Certification Institute, Adjat Sudrajat, is a part of the generation that gets to experience RPL. When undergoing his bachelor study in MICE, he didn’t have to go through eight semesters just like a regular degree.
“I was a part of yesterday’s education. When taking my bachelor’s degree, I didn’t have to take 8 semesters, just cutting some courses, as MICE industry players have expertise in various disciplines,” Adjat reminisced.
Despite that, Santi said, a university-level education is still important, but MICE industry players need more than a degree. To increase one’s qualification as a MICE industry player, a diploma supplement is necessary. It includes certificates from participation in seminars or MICE organizing committees.
“This certificate shows that the MICE graduate is experienced. It will be even better to have a competence certificate,” she added.
